Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Apache Shiro's shiro-guice module allows an attacker to bypass authentication in a web servlet context by sending a specially crafted HTTP request. It is similar to CVE-2020-1957 but affects the shiro-guice module instead of shiro-spring. All Apache Shiro versions through 2.x and 3.0.0-alpha-0 are affected. The issue is resolved by upgrading to version 3.0.0 or later.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker to bypass authentication controls, potentially gaining unauthorized access to protected resources. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.2 (high severity), indicating a significant security risk without user interaction or privileges required.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Apache Shiro to version 3.0.0 or later, which contains the fix for this authentication bypass vulnerability. No other official remediation or temporary fixes are documented. Patch status is not explicitly stated but the upgrade guidance is authoritative.
