Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-56688 is an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) in Dell PowerFlex Manager prior to version 5.1.0.1. It arises from improper neutralization of special elements used in OS commands during OS Repository processing. An attacker with high privileges and remote access can exploit this to execute arbitrary commands as root, potentially compromising the entire appliance and enabling lateral movement within the managed environment. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 9.1, reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, high privileges required, no user interaction, scope changed, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No official patch or remediation level is currently documented.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker with high privileges and remote access to execute arbitrary OS commands as root on the affected appliance. This can lead to full compromise of the Dell PowerFlex Manager appliance and enable lateral movement into the managed infrastructure, severely impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system and connected resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict remote access to trusted administrators only and monitor for suspicious activity related to OS Repository processing. Follow Dell's official communications for updates on patches or mitigations.
