Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: bitwarden
Product: server

Description

Bitwarden Server before 2026.5.0 contains a privilege escalation vulnerability that allows authenticated Custom users with ManageUsers permission to remove Admin accounts from an organization by exploiting a missing role hierarchy check in the bulk user-remove endpoint. Attackers can supply Admin organization-user IDs in a bulk DELETE request to bypass the guard enforced on the single-user removal path, effectively removing one or more Admin accounts from an organization.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-57520 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in Bitwarden Server before version 2026.5.0. The issue arises from a missing role hierarchy check in the bulk user-remove API endpoint. Authenticated users who have ManageUsers permission but are not Admins can exploit this by submitting bulk DELETE requests containing Admin organization-user IDs. This bypasses the protections present in the single-user removal path, enabling the removal of Admin accounts from the organization without proper authorization.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated users with ManageUsers permission to escalate their privileges by removing Admin accounts from an organization. This can disrupt administrative control and potentially degrade the security posture of the affected Bitwarden Server instance. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict ManageUsers permissions to trusted users only and monitor user removal activities closely to detect any unauthorized actions.
