A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-147.147 or later, or the corresponding fixed versions listed. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms the availability of fixes. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2026-64437 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ksmbd SMB2 server implementation. It occurs when a deferred file_lock is freed during SMB2_CLOSE handling but later accessed again during an SMB2_CANCEL operation, leading to a use-after-free condition. This flaw was confirmed with Kernel Address Sanitizer (KASAN) on mainline kernel 7.1-rc7. The vulnerability allows an authenticated SMB client to trigger a kernel memory corruption. It has been fixed in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-147.147 and later.
