Published: 07/21/2026 (07/21/2026, 09:34:57 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Fory

Description

CVE-2026-64609 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Apache Fory affecting versions from 0.5.0 up to but not including 1.4.0. The issue occurs when the opt-in feature of out-of-band zero-copy deserialization is used, specifically in the readAlignedVarUint() function, which can read beyond the buffer bounds. Versions 1.4.0 and later include a fix for this vulnerability. Applications not using the zero-copy deserialization feature are not affected.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Apache Fory (formerly Apache Fury) involves an out-of-bounds read via sun.misc.Unsafe during out-of-band zero-copy deserialization. The function readAlignedVarUint() can read beyond the underlying buffer's bounds, potentially leading to memory safety issues. The vulnerability affects versions from 0.5.0 before 1.4.0, including those published under Maven coordinates org.apache.fury:fury-core before 0.11.0. The issue is limited to applications that opt-in to the zero-copy deserialization feature.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows reading beyond the allocated buffer, which could lead to exposure of sensitive memory contents or application instability. However, exploitation requires the use of the out-of-band zero-copy deserialization feature, which is not enabled by default. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade to Apache Fory version 1.4.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Applications that do not use the out-of-band zero-copy deserialization feature are not affected and do not require immediate action. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed beyond the recommendation to upgrade; therefore, users should follow vendor guidance and upgrade accordingly.
