Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

CVE-2026-6507 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in dnsmasq on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. A remote attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted BOOTREPLY packet to a dnsmasq server configured with the --dhcp-split-relay option. Successful exploitation causes memory corruption, leading to a denial of service (DoS) via daemon crash. The vulnerability has a high severity with a CVSS score of 7. 5. No known exploits are reported in the wild. The vendor advisory does not specify a patch or remediation status at this time.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves an out-of-bounds write in the dnsmasq service when processing BOOTREPLY packets under the --dhcp-split-relay configuration. The flaw allows remote attackers to cause memory corruption, resulting in a crash of the dnsmasq daemon and denial of service. It affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.5 (high), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and impact limited to availability.

Potential Impact

Exploitation leads to a denial of service condition by crashing the dnsmasq daemon due to memory corruption. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-6507 for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, consider disabling the --dhcp-split-relay option if feasible to mitigate exposure.
