VulnerabilityCVE-2026-6507cvecve-2026-6507
Published: Fri Apr 17 2026 (04/17/2026, 12:23:31 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

A flaw was found in dnsmasq. A remote attacker could exploit an out-of-bounds write vulnerability by sending a specially crafted BOOTREPLY (Bootstrap Protocol Reply) packet to a dnsmasq server configured with the `--dhcp-split-relay` option. This can lead to memory corruption, causing the dnsmasq daemon to crash and resulting in a denial of service (DoS).

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability affects the dnsmasq service in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 when configured with the --dhcp-split-relay option. A remote attacker can send a crafted BOOTREPLY packet that triggers an out-of-bounds write, leading to memory corruption and a denial of service via daemon crash. The CVSS 3.1 vector indicates the attack requires no privileges or user interaction and impacts availability only. Red Hat has published an advisory but has not yet provided a confirmed patch or remediation guidance.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a denial of service condition by crashing the dnsmasq daemon due to memory corruption. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The vulnerability can be exploited remotely without authentication.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-6507 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider disabling the --dhcp-split-relay option if feasible or restricting access to the dnsmasq service from untrusted networks to reduce exposure.
