A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 7.0.0-1013.13 and later. Users should update to these fixed versions or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2026-72034 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's fhandle subsystem. It involves a race condition where a detached mount can cause a NULL pointer dereference in capable_wrt_mount(), leading to a kernel panic. This occurs because the mount namespace pointer may become NULL between checks, and the helper function does not handle this case properly. The issue was fixed by making the helper return false when a detached mount is observed, preventing unauthorized access via open_by_handle_at().
