A patch addressing this vulnerability is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel versions including 6.8.0-147.147 and later. Users and administrators should update to these fixed kernel versions as soon as possible. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that these updates correct the flaw. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official patches.
Description
CVE-2026-72110 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel related to the bpf_storage member during process forking. The flaw occurs because the nascent task's bpf_storage pointer may be a copied pointer from the parent rather than properly initialized, leading to use-after-free (UAF) conditions and potential kernel hangs. This happens when copy_process() bails out early before initializing bpf_storage, and the faulty pointer is accessed during task cleanup. The issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases in the 6.8 and 7.0 series and some earlier versions. A patch is available and has been incorporated in several fixed kernel versions.
