Description

CVE-2026-77521 is a critical OS command injection vulnerability in MaxKB, an open-source AI assistant for enterprise. Versions prior to 2.10.5-lts allow untrusted input to execute shell commands without human approval due to improper sandboxing and command execution controls. This can lead to full system compromise. The issue is fixed in version 2.10.5-lts.

Technical Analysis

MaxKB versions before 2.10.5-lts use SandboxShellBackend for executing shell commands but fail to exclude the execute shell tool and omit it from interrupt_on, allowing untrusted chat or ingested content to trigger command execution without human approval. Deployments with MAXKB_SANDBOX disabled run commands directly as the application user, and the official root container's gosu wrapper permits shell metacharacters to escape the sandbox. This improper neutralization of special elements leads to OS command injection (CWE-78). The vulnerability is resolved in version 2.10.5-lts.

Potential Impact

An attacker can execute arbitrary OS commands remotely without any user interaction or privileges, leading to complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. The CVSS score of 10.0 reflects the critical severity and the potential for full system takeover.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to MaxKB version 2.10.5-lts or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Until then, avoid disabling the MAXKB_SANDBOX environment variable and do not use vulnerable versions in production environments.
