VulnerabilityCVE-2026-86742cvecve-2026-86742
Published: 09/09/2026 (09/09/2026, 13:32:07 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: grokability
Product: snipe-it

Description

Snipe-IT versions through 8.6.3 have a vulnerability in the unaccepted assets acceptance report CSV export where formula elements are not properly neutralized. An authenticated low-privilege user can inject spreadsheet formulas into free-text fields that appear in the report. When the CSV is opened by a user with report viewing privileges, the formulas may be executed in spreadsheet applications like Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or Google Sheets. This can lead to data exfiltration or command execution on legacy Windows Excel configurations. The issue is fixed in version 8.7.0.

Technical Analysis

Snipe-IT through 8.6.3 does not apply proper escaping to formula elements in the unaccepted assets acceptance report CSV export. The ReportsController::postAssetAcceptanceReport method builds the CSV manually without using the League\Csv\EscapeFormula or honoring the escape_formulas configuration. This allows an authenticated low-privilege user to inject spreadsheet formulas by setting free-text fields (such as asset name, tag, company name, category, model, or assignee display name) to values starting with characters like =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return. When a user with reports.view privileges exports and opens the CSV, the injected formulas are evaluated in the spreadsheet context, enabling potential data exfiltration (e.g., via HYPERLINK/WEBSERVICE) or DDE command execution on legacy Windows Excel. The vulnerability is fixed in version 8.7.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with low-privilege authenticated access can inject malicious spreadsheet formulas into CSV exports viewed by users with report viewing privileges. This can lead to data exfiltration or remote code execution on vulnerable spreadsheet applications, posing a medium severity risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Snipe-IT to version 8.7.0 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. Until then, restrict access to the unaccepted assets acceptance report CSV export to trusted users only and avoid opening such CSV files in vulnerable spreadsheet applications.
