Published: 09/09/2026 (09/09/2026, 13:32:20 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: grokability
Product: snipe-it

Description

Snipe-IT versions 8.2.0 through 8.6.x contain an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the UsersController update function. This flaw allows an authenticated non-admin user with users.edit permission to toggle the activated status of any user, including admins and superusers, by submitting a crafted PUT request. Only the activated field is affected; other sensitive fields remain protected. The issue is fixed in version 8.7.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Snipe-IT (CVE-2026-86760) is due to improper authorization checks in app/Http/Controllers/Users/UsersController::update(). The activated field is assigned from the request payload before the authorization gate canEditAuthFields is evaluated. As a result, an authenticated user with users.edit permission scoped to the company can deactivate or reactivate any user account, including admin and superuser accounts. This can lock out admin accounts until re-enabled by another admin. Other sensitive fields such as username, email, password, and permissions are not affected. The API and bulk-edit paths are not vulnerable. The flaw affects versions 8.2.0 through 8.6.x and is fixed in 8.7.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with authenticated users.edit permission can toggle the activation status of any user account, including administrators and superusers. This can lead to denial of access for admin accounts if deactivated. No sensitive data disclosure or modification of other user fields is possible through this vulnerability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Snipe-IT version 8.7.0. Users should upgrade to version 8.7.0 or later to remediate this authorization flaw. Until then, restrict users.edit permissions carefully to trusted users only.
