Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in the ZstdCompressCtx.loadDict function of the Dictionary Sharing component in luben zstd-jni up to version 1.5.7-13. It results from improper handling of memory leading to use-after-free conditions. Remote attackers can exploit this flaw without authentication or user interaction. The vendor responded promptly and released a patch identified by commit a560131d7834598afd9cea6b7c107bc88e915936, resolving the issue in version 1.5.7-14.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this use-after-free vulnerability may lead to memory corruption, which can cause application crashes or potentially allow attackers to execute arbitrary code or disrupt service. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9 (medium severity), reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and limited confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the affected component to version 1.5.7-14 or later, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified or required as the vendor has provided an official patch.
