Published: 09/16/2026 (09/16/2026, 17:31:38 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: projectdiscovery
Product: nuclei

Description

Nuclei versions before 3.11.1 have an improper verification of cryptographic signatures where template verification relies solely on file modification time without validating content checksums. This allows attackers to replace verified templates with malicious unsigned content and restore the original modification time to bypass signature checks, potentially leading to arbitrary operating system command execution.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-92718 affects projectdiscovery's nuclei tool versions >=3.7.0 and <3.11.1. The vulnerability arises because the software caches template signature verification based only on file modification timestamps, omitting content checksum validation. An attacker can exploit this by substituting a verified template with a malicious unsigned one and resetting the file's modification time to the original value, thereby bypassing signature verification. This can result in execution of arbitrary OS commands under the privileges of the user running nuclei.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with local or limited privileges to execute arbitrary operating system commands by bypassing signature verification of templates. This undermines the integrity of the template verification process and can lead to system compromise or unauthorized actions performed by nuclei.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade nuclei to version 3.11.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Versions before 3.11.1 are affected. No official patch links were provided in the input, but the vendor advisory should be consulted for the official fix. Until upgrading, avoid using untrusted templates and verify template integrity manually if possible.
