This issue is fixed in the Linux kernel by commits identified as a940003f44e7e441c228151dd212642152700ec8, 671a68654a9d319d7f0d53a6321db3d9b391bdef, and 4e7a4af364c2048bafb213bf0ef4a89dcbe1bfd4. Users should update to a patched kernel version that includes these fixes. No additional mitigation is required as the fix prevents stale pointer usage by changing the pointer assignment order.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's phylink subsystem was fixed by ensuring the PHY device pointer is recorded only after the last potentially failing step during bringup. Previously, an error during PHY initialization could leave a stale pointer to a freed PHY device, causing subsequent operations to access invalid memory. This issue affected Linux kernel version 6.14 and was resolved by changing the order of pointer assignment to prevent use-after-free conditions.
