Description

FFmpeg versions 2.7 through 8.1.2 contain an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the TDSC video decoder. This flaw arises when processing crafted AVI files that change frame dimensions across TDSF frames, leading to heap corruption. The vulnerability is due to the tdsc_parse_tdsf() function not properly unreferencing existing reference frames before buffer allocation, causing subsequent functions to write beyond buffer boundaries. This can result in a process crash and potentially allow remote code execution.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FFmpeg's TDSC video decoder affects versions 2.7 through 8.1.2. It is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) caused by improper handling of reference frames in the tdsc_parse_tdsf() function. When a crafted AVI file changes frame dimensions across TDSF frames, the existing reference frame is not unreferenced before av_frame_get_buffer() is called. This leads to tdsc_blit() and tdsc_yuv2rgb() writing attacker-controlled pixel data beyond the allocated buffer, causing heap corruption. The impact includes process crashes and potential remote code execution by a remote attacker supplying malicious media files.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can exploit this vulnerability by supplying specially crafted AVI files to cause heap corruption. This may lead to application crashes and potentially remote code execution within the context of the affected process. The vulnerability affects the security and stability of systems using vulnerable FFmpeg versions for media processing.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid processing untrusted AVI files with the TDSC video decoder in affected FFmpeg versions. Monitor vendor channels for updates and apply patches promptly once released.
