A patch is available in filelock version 4.2.1 or later that addresses this issue. Users should upgrade to the fixed version to eliminate the vulnerability. Until patched, ensure that lock directories are not writable by untrusted local users or avoid using filelock on filesystems that reuse inode numbers immediately. Note that StrictSoftFileLock is not affected. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the filelock library versions 3.22.0 through 4.2.0 allows a local unprivileged user to cause two processes of the lock user to hold the same lock simultaneously. This occurs due to a race condition in the stale-lock break mechanism that relies on inode numbers and modification times. On filesystems like ext4 and xfs that reuse inode numbers immediately after file deletion, an attacker can create and unlink files to manipulate lock markers, causing live lock files to be removed incorrectly. This results in a high integrity impact as concurrent holders can write protected data without detection, though confidentiality and availability are unaffected.
