GHSA-66m8-c62j-h6v5: jxl-oxide: `FrameBuffer::new` creates out-of-bounds slices on overflow

Source: GCVE Database
Product: jxl-oxide

Description

The jxl-oxide crate has a vulnerability in its FrameBuffer::new function where unchecked usize multiplication can lead to creating undersized buffers. This causes panics during buffer initialization on 32-bit platforms and can lead to out-of-bounds slice creation through certain safe accessors, potentially causing undefined behavior. However, normal decoding paths do not trigger this undefined behavior because those accessors are not used internally. The vulnerability results in a denial-of-service condition due to panics on out-of-range access.

Technical Analysis

jxl-oxide's public safe API FrameBuffer::new performs unchecked multiplication of usize values, which can create an undersized FrameBuffer allocation. On 32-bit platforms, this leads to panics when accessing out-of-range indices, causing denial of service. Additionally, safe grouped buffer accessors can create invalid oversized slices from smaller allocations, resulting in undefined behavior, though these accessors are not used in normal decoding paths, preventing exploitation in typical use cases.

Potential Impact

On 32-bit platforms, this vulnerability can cause application panics due to out-of-range index access, resulting in denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, and undefined behavior is theoretically possible but not reached in normal usage.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently documented. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using affected versions on 32-bit platforms or in contexts where FrameBuffer::new might be called with unchecked multiplication inputs.
