Published: 07/03/2026 (07/03/2026, 20:45:10 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Vendor/Project: Open Asset Import Library
Product: Assimp

Description

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the Open Asset Import Library (Assimp) up to version 6.0.5. The flaw is located in the function Assimp::CSMImporter::InternReadFile within the CSM File Handler component. Exploitation requires local access and can lead to memory corruption. A patch has been created to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-14610 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability affecting the Open Asset Import Library (Assimp) versions 6.0.0 through 6.0.5. The vulnerability resides in the Assimp::CSMImporter::InternReadFile function of the CSM File Handler component (code/AssetLib/CSM/CSMLoader.cpp). This flaw allows local attackers with limited privileges to cause a buffer overflow on the heap, potentially leading to memory corruption. An exploit has been published, but exploitation requires local access. A patch identified by commit eb84eec580d3f4ba2f0fd87409b7d0744620f11e is recommended to fix the issue.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows local attackers to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow, which may result in memory corruption. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 4.8 (medium severity), reflecting limited attack vector (local), low complexity, and no user interaction required. There is no indication of remote exploitation or privilege escalation beyond local access.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and recommended to fix this vulnerability. The patch is identified by commit eb84eec580d3f4ba2f0fd87409b7d0744620f11e. Users should apply this patch to affected versions 6.0.0 through 6.0.5 of Assimp to remediate the issue.
