Description

ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 have a memory leak vulnerability in the GIF encoder. This occurs because allocated memory is not released when color quantization fails during GIF encoding. An attacker can exploit this by supplying images that cause quantization failure, leading to memory leaks and potential degradation of system availability.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109261 describes a memory leak vulnerability in ImageMagick's GIF encoder present in versions prior to 6.9.13-57 and 7.x prior to 7.1.2-32. The issue arises when color quantization fails during GIF encoding, causing allocated memory not to be freed properly. This flaw can be triggered by specially crafted images that cause quantization failure, resulting in repeated memory leaks that degrade system availability over time.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability leads to a memory leak that can degrade system availability by exhausting memory resources when processing maliciously crafted images. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in ImageMagick versions 6.9.13-57 and 7.1.2-32 and later. Users should upgrade to these or newer versions to remediate the memory leak vulnerability. No other mitigation is indicated.
