Description

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-26 and 6.9.13-51 is missing a check for the allowed memory allocation limit in matrix-backed operations such as -canny. An attacker can supply a crafted image that causes ImageMagick to allocate more memory than permitted by the configured policy, resulting in a denial of service.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-61465) affects ImageMagick versions prior to 7.1.2-26 and 6.9.13-51. The issue arises because the software does not enforce memory allocation limits during certain matrix-backed operations, including the -canny operation. An attacker can exploit this by providing a specially crafted image that causes excessive memory allocation beyond the configured policy limits, resulting in denial of service due to resource exhaustion. The vulnerability is categorized under CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). No known exploits in the wild have been reported, and no patch or official fix information is provided in the available data.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation leads to denial of service by exhausting system memory resources when processing crafted images. This can disrupt availability of services relying on ImageMagick for image processing. There is no indication of code execution or data compromise from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, users should consider restricting or monitoring use of matrix-backed operations like -canny on untrusted input to reduce risk of denial of service.
