Description

CVE-2026-78593 is a medium severity vulnerability in Kibana's Cribl integration where an insufficiently validated configuration field allows an authenticated user with Fleet management privileges to inject expressions into a server-side script template. This injection can cause an Elasticsearch ingest pipeline to be written with permissions beyond the user's authorized scope, leading to privilege escalation. A patch is available to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from improper validation of a configuration field in Kibana's Cribl integration. An authenticated user holding Kibana Fleet management privileges can inject attacker-controlled expressions into a server-side script template. This results in the creation or modification of an Elasticsearch ingest pipeline with permissions exceeding those authorized for the caller, effectively escalating privileges within the Elasticsearch environment. The issue affects Kibana versions >=8.0.0 <8.19.21, >=9.0.0 <9.4.6, and >=9.5.0 <9.5.3. No known exploits in the wild have been reported. A patch is available to remediate this vulnerability.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with Kibana Fleet management privileges can escalate their privileges by injecting expressions into server-side scripts, causing Elasticsearch ingest pipelines to be created or modified beyond their authorized permissions. This could lead to unauthorized changes in Elasticsearch ingest pipelines, potentially impacting data processing and security controls within the Elasticsearch environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade Kibana to versions 8.19.21 or later, 9.4.6 or later, and 9.5.3 or later as applicable to their deployment. Applying the official fix will prevent the privilege escalation caused by injection in the Cribl integration configuration field.
