Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ptp: ocp: fix resource freeing order Commit a60fc3294a37 ("ptp: rework ptp_clock_unregister() to disable events") added a call to ptp_disable_all_events() which changes the configuration of pins if they support EXTTS events. In ptp_ocp_detach() pins resources are freed before ptp_clock_unregister() and it leads to use-after-free during driver removal. Fix it by changing the order of free/unregister calls. To avoid irq handler running on the other core while ptp device unregistering, call synchronize_irq() after HW is configured to stop producing irqs and no irqs are in-flight.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in the Linux kernel ptp driver involves improper resource management during driver removal. A commit introduced a call to ptp_disable_all_events() which modifies pin configurations supporting EXTTS events. However, in the ptp_ocp_detach() function, pin resources were freed before calling ptp_clock_unregister(), causing a use-after-free condition. The fix reorders these calls to free resources after unregistering the ptp clock and adds a synchronize_irq() call to ensure no IRQ handlers run concurrently on other cores during device removal.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability can cause a use-after-free condition leading to potential kernel instability or crashes (denial of service). There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The CVSS vector indicates local attack vector, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, but high availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid unloading or removing the affected ptp driver module on production systems. Monitor vendor channels for updates and apply patches promptly once released.
