Description

The npm package devplatform-react-scripts version 35.2.9 contains malicious code that executes arbitrary attacker binaries on the host machine. Upon loading, it reconstructs obfuscated Cloudflare Workers hostnames and uses a DNS-TXT base64 fallback to fetch a platform-specific binary. This binary is saved to temporary directories, given executable permissions, and executed detached from the main process. The package masquerades as a react-scripts adapter, but its actual behavior is to run opaque malicious code. Telemetry mechanisms are included with opt-out environment variables. Any user installing and requiring this package version is at risk of arbitrary code execution.

Technical Analysis

The devplatform-react-scripts npm package version 35.2.9 includes malicious functionality where its index.js requires an _init.js script that reconstructs obfuscated Cloudflare Workers hostnames and uses a DNS-TXT base64 fallback domain to fetch a platform-specific binary over HTTPS. This binary is written to /var/tmp/.cache_<hex> on Unix or %TEMP%\dotnet_diag_<hex>.exe on Windows, permissions are set to executable (chmod 0755), and it is spawned detached via shell commands. The package includes telemetry markers and environment variable opt-outs for tracking. The advertised purpose as a react-scripts adapter does not align with the execution of this opaque binary, resulting in arbitrary attacker code execution on any machine that installs and requires this package version.

Potential Impact

Any consumer who installs and requires devplatform-react-scripts version 35.2.9 is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution by an attacker. This allows the attacker to run any code on the victim's machine with the permissions of the user running the package, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or further malware deployment.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented. Users should immediately avoid installing or requiring devplatform-react-scripts version 35.2.9. Remove this package from any projects and replace it with a trusted alternative. Monitor for any unexpected binaries in temporary directories as described. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or npm security advisories for updates. Consider scanning your environment for this package and any dropped binaries.
