Description

The npm package 'rollup-packages-node-polyfills' is a typosquatting malicious package that executes hidden code upon import. It decodes and runs a base64-encoded command to silently install another malicious package 'cors-update', then dynamically loads and executes code from that package. This behavior is unexpected and unrelated to its advertised functionality as a Rollup Node polyfills plugin. Systems with this package installed should be considered fully compromised, and all secrets and keys on those systems should be rotated immediately.

Technical Analysis

The 'rollup-packages-node-polyfills' npm package is a typosquatting malicious package impersonating 'rollup-plugin-polyfill-node'. Upon requiring its main entry point, it base64-decodes a command to install the 'cors-update' package silently without saving it to dependencies or auditing. After installation, it dynamically requires 'cors-update' and invokes its '.getPlugin()()' method, executing arbitrary code. Both the install command and target module name are stored as base64 literals to evade detection by plain-text scanners. This behavior is not consistent with the package's advertised purpose and indicates malicious intent.

Potential Impact

Any system with this package installed or running is considered fully compromised. The package executes arbitrary code that could lead to complete system takeover. All secrets and keys stored on the compromised system should be rotated immediately from a secure, unaffected system. Removing the package alone may not fully remove the malicious presence, as the attacker may have established persistent control.

Defensive Guidance

Remove the 'rollup-packages-node-polyfills' package immediately from all affected systems. Rotate all secrets, keys, and credentials that were stored or accessible on the compromised systems from a secure environment. Because full system compromise is likely, consider rebuilding affected systems from trusted backups or reinstalling the operating system. Monitor for any signs of persistence or further compromise. Patch status is not applicable as this is a malicious package, not a vulnerability with an official fix.
