Description

Microsoft has confirmed that USB audio devices may fail on some Windows systems after installing the KB5124008and KB5124012 September 2026 security updates. [...]

Impact

The impact is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices on Windows 11 24H2 or later experiencing failure to start, loss of audio output, and inability to use multichannel audio features. This disrupts audio functionality for affected users but does not indicate broader system compromise or security risk.

Defensive guidance

Microsoft has not yet provided an official workaround or fix. Users experiencing issues may temporarily restore audio by switching their USB audio devices to 2-channel mode. Monitor Microsoft's release health dashboard for updates and official remediation guidance.
