Description

Open WebUI versions from 0.7.0 up to but not including 0.11.4 have a cross-origin message handling vulnerability in the SyncStatsModal component. This flaw allows any website to steal a signed-in user's session token by sending unvalidated verify:chat messages. The vulnerability involves a path-traversal chat ID that redirects an authenticated stats export request to the authentication endpoint, exposing the victim's JWT token and enabling full API access.

Technical Analysis

The Open WebUI application versions 0.7.0 before 0.11.4 contain a cross-origin message handling vulnerability in the SyncStatsModal feature. This vulnerability permits an attacker-controlled website to post unvalidated verify:chat messages that exploit a path-traversal in the chat ID parameter. This causes the authenticated stats export request to be redirected to the authentication endpoint, resulting in the disclosure of the victim's JSON Web Token (JWT). With the stolen JWT, an attacker can gain full API access as the authenticated user.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation leads to theft of a signed-in user's session token (JWT), granting the attacker full API access under the victim's identity. This compromises confidentiality and integrity of the user's data and actions within the application. The vulnerability does not impact availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Open WebUI version 0.11.4 and later. Users should upgrade to version 0.11.4 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional vendor advisory or patch links were provided; therefore, verify the vendor's official channels for the patch and further guidance.
