Description

Open WebUI versions from 0.8.8 up to but not including 0.11.4 have an improper authorization vulnerability. This flaw allows users who have been deactivated to continue executing terminal commands via an already open terminal WebSocket connection. The vulnerability exists because the terminal proxy route only verifies access on the first message, enabling continued unauthorized command execution and file access.

Technical Analysis

Open WebUI versions 0.8.8 before 0.11.4 contain an improper authorization vulnerability (CVE-2026-109289) where deactivated users can maintain execution of terminal commands through an already established terminal WebSocket. The terminal proxy route in terminals.py performs access checks only on the initial message, allowing continued command execution and file operations by users who should no longer have access.

Potential Impact

Deactivated users can continue to execute terminal commands and read or write files on the terminal server via an existing WebSocket connection. This can lead to unauthorized information disclosure, integrity violations, and availability impacts on the terminal server.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid leaving terminal WebSocket sessions open for deactivated users and consider terminating existing sessions upon user deactivation.
