Technical Analysis

Open Babel up to version 3.1.1 (and all versions prior to 3.2.0) contains a security vulnerability in the function OpenBabel::transform3d::DescribeAsString located in src/math/transform3d.cpp, part of the CIF File Handler. The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read (CWE-119) that can be triggered remotely. The issue was reported early but the project has not responded with a fix. The advisory is a duplicate and has been withdrawn, preserving external references. No patch or remediation has been provided by the vendor as of the advisory date.

Potential Impact

The out-of-bounds read vulnerability may allow remote attackers to read memory beyond intended bounds, potentially leading to information disclosure or application crashes. The severity is assessed as low, indicating limited impact or exploitability. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or patch has been provided, users should monitor vendor communications for updates. Avoid processing untrusted CIF files with affected versions until a fix is available.
