Description

An authorization flaw in the Backstage TechDocs backend plugin allows an authenticated user with access to one documentation site to access documentation belonging to other entities. This issue only affects deployments using the external TechDocs builder with external storage providers (such as S3 or GCS) and the permission framework enabled. Deployments without the permission framework or those serving TechDocs from local storage are not affected. The vulnerability is patched in version 2.2.4 of the @backstage/plugin-techdocs-backend package.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-106489 describes an improper authorization enforcement vulnerability in the Backstage TechDocs backend plugin. Authenticated users with access to one TechDocs site could craft URLs to read documentation from other entities when using the external TechDocs builder with external storage providers and the permission framework enabled. This flaw does not affect instances without the permission framework or those serving content locally. The issue is fixed in version 2.2.4 of the plugin.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthorized read access to TechDocs documentation belonging to other entities within the same deployment, potentially exposing sensitive documentation. The impact is limited to deployments using external storage providers with the permission framework enabled. Confidentiality is affected (high impact), but integrity and availability are not impacted.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to @backstage/plugin-techdocs-backend version 2.2.4 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Deployments serving TechDocs content from local storage are not affected and require no action. No other workarounds are available.
