Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-106490 is an improper input validation vulnerability in the @backstage/plugin-techdocs-backend component. Specifically, when the Azure Blob Storage provider is used, an authenticated Backstage user may bypass entity-level permissions to access restricted TechDocs content. The risk increases if the default backend authentication policy is disabled. This vulnerability is addressed in version 2.2.4 of the plugin.

Potential Impact

Authenticated users may gain unauthorized read access to restricted TechDocs content, potentially exposing sensitive documentation. The vulnerability does not affect confidentiality beyond read access and does not impact integrity or availability. Deployments with disabled default backend authentication policies face broader exposure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-techdocs-backend to version 2.2.4 or later, where the vulnerability is patched. Until the upgrade can be applied, restrict access to the TechDocs backend to users authorized to view all stored documentation and ensure the default backend authentication policy remains enabled.
