Description
CVE-2024-12718 is a vulnerability in the Python tarfile module that allows modification of file metadata such as timestamps or permissions outside the intended extraction directory via maliciously crafted tar archives using certain extraction filters. Exploitation requires convincing a privileged user or process to extract a malicious tar file, which reduces the overall impact. Red Hat has marked Python 3.6 as not affected in their RHEL 8 distribution. No patch or mitigation meeting Red Hat's criteria is currently available. The cert-manager Operator for Red Hat OpenShift 1.16.0 is mentioned in the advisory context but no direct fix for this CVE is listed in the advisory.
