Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vsock/virtio: discard packets if the transport changes If the socket has been de-assigned or assigned to another transport, we must discard any packets received because they are not expected and would cause issues when we access vsk->transport. A possible scenario is described by Hyunwoo Kim in the attached link, where after a first connect() interrupted by a signal, and a second connect() failed, we can find `vsk->transport` at NULL, leading to a NULL pointer dereference.

Technical Analysis

Red Hat Product Security released an advisory (RHSA-2025:8669) for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 kernel packages addressing five vulnerabilities: CVE-2025-21669 (vsock/virtio packet discard on transport change), CVE-2025-21926 (ownership fix in __udp_gso_segment), CVE-2025-21997 (integer overflow in xp_create_and_assign_umem), CVE-2025-22055 (integer overflow in geneve_opt length), and CVE-2025-37943 (invalid data access in ath12k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi). These vulnerabilities affect the core Linux kernel components and drivers. The advisory provides updated kernel packages that fix these issues. The update requires a system reboot to take effect. No CVSS scores are provided in the advisory, but the overall impact is rated as important.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities affect critical kernel components and drivers, potentially leading to issues such as improper packet handling, memory corruption, and invalid data access. These could impact system stability and security. The advisory does not report any known exploits in the wild. The overall security impact is rated as important by Red Hat, indicating a high risk if left unpatched.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated kernel packages that address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the kernel update as described in the advisory (https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258) and reboot their systems to ensure the fixes take effect. This is the official and recommended remediation. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor.
