Red Hat has released an official security update that fixes this vulnerability. Users should apply the updated munge packages (version 0.5.13-3.el8_10) available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and related products as detailed in the Red Hat advisory (RHSA-2026:3032). Applying this update remediates the buffer overflow and prevents key leakage and credential forgery.
Description
A buffer overflow vulnerability in the MUNGE authentication service's message unpacking allows key leakage and credential forgery. MUNGE is used in HPC cluster environments to authenticate UIDs and GIDs across hosts sharing a cryptographic key. This flaw could enable attackers to forge credentials within the security realm. Red Hat has issued a security update addressing this issue for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and related products.
