Until a fix is available, cluster administrators should avoid granting the cdi.kubevirt.io:view ClusterRole or the built-in Kubernetes view role via cluster-wide ClusterRoleBinding. Instead, use namespace-scoped RoleBindings for these permissions. Administrators should audit namespaces to identify identities that have both view-equivalent access and separate edit or admin access to the same namespaces, as this combination enables cross-namespace data exfiltration. Applying all previously released errata and updates is recommended. Monitor Red Hat advisories for official fixes.
Description
CVE-2026-17527 is a vulnerability in Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization's containerized-data-importer (CDI) component. The aggregated cdi.kubevirt.io:view ClusterRole, intended for read-only access, improperly grants create permission on the datavolumes/source subresource. This allows users with view role plus write access to any namespace to clone and exfiltrate data from any PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC) across namespaces, bypassing namespace isolation and read-only guarantees.
