Red Hat provides a mitigation by patching the tarfile module code to raise an error on negative offsets, preventing the infinite loop. Users should apply this mitigation in their Python environment until an official patch is available.
Description
A denial of service vulnerability exists in the Python tarfile module used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI 1.5 (AMD). Processing a specially crafted tar archive with negative offsets can cause an infinite loop and deadlock, resulting in application denial of service. No other security impacts are reported. A mitigation involves patching the tarfile module code to reject negative offsets. No official fix has been released yet.
