What to do
AI-suggested
A fix is available via the Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs update as detailed in the Red Hat Advisory RHSA-2026:6935. Until patched, mitigate risk by restricting recursive DNS queries to trusted or internal networks, applying rate limiting or firewall rules to prevent excessive or repetitive requests, enabling DNSSEC validation to reject forged records, and isolating recursive resolvers from authoritative servers. Active monitoring of CPU usage and query volume can help detect abuse. Red Hat recommends applying the update promptly to resolve the issue.
Description
A vulnerability in BIND 9 resolvers allows remote unauthenticated attackers to cause excessive CPU utilization by processing malformed DNSKEY records, leading to denial of service (DoS) conditions for legitimate DNS clients. This affects recursive DNS resolvers but not authoritative servers. The issue impacts availability only and does not enable code execution, data exposure, or privilege escalation. Mitigation includes restricting recursive queries to trusted networks and applying rate limiting or firewall rules. A patch update for Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs addressing this issue is available.
