Upgrade rust-zip to version 9.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated or effective since the issue is a flaw in symbolic link validation during extraction. Users should avoid using vulnerable versions for extracting untrusted ZIP files.
Description
A vulnerability in the Rust zip library versions from 7.2.0 until 9.0.0 allows an attacker to exploit symbolic link validation flaws during ZIP extraction. The issue arises because the library uses lexical prefix comparison instead of resolving intermediate symlinks, enabling crafted symlink chains to escape the intended extraction directory. On Windows, additional privilege conditions can allow single-link escapes. This flaw can lead to attacker-controlled files being created or overwritten with the extracting process's privileges. The vulnerability is fixed in version 9.0.0.
