Technical Summary
The Linux kernel vulnerability involved improper validation in the drm/xe/uapi interface, specifically in the xe_vm_madvise_ioctl() function. It allowed the use of the coh_none PAT index with CPU cached buffers, which is a security risk because the GPU can bypass CPU caches and access stale data in DRAM that may contain sensitive information from other processes. The fix added validation to reject such PAT indices for CPU cached memory, aligning with existing validation in the vm_bind path. The restriction was limited to integrated GPUs to mitigate the issue.
Potential Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data from previously freed memory pages of other processes due to GPU bypassing CPU caches and reading stale data directly from DRAM. This poses a confidentiality risk on affected systems.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix has been implemented in Linux kernel versions 7.0.0-28.28.1 and later, which adds validation to reject the coh_none PAT index for CPU cached memory in the drm/xe/uapi madvise ioctl. Systems should be updated to a fixed kernel version to mitigate this vulnerability.

Technical Analysis
