UBUNTU-CVE-2026-58101

0
Medium
Published: 07/13/2026 (07/13/2026, 23:16:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: libcrypt-openssl-x509-perl

Description

Crypt::OpenSSL::X509 versions before 2.1.3 for Perl contain a vulnerability that allows denial of service via NULL pointer dereference. The issue arises when certain extensions in X509 certificates fail to parse correctly, leading to dereferencing of NULL pointers and causing the Perl process to crash with a SIGSEGV. This affects multiple specific versions of the libcrypt-openssl-x509-perl package.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Crypt::OpenSSL::X509 (before version 2.1.3) involves the X509V3_EXT_d2i(ext) function returning NULL when an extension's DER value fails to parse. Subsequent helper functions such as basicC, ia5string, and auth_att dereference this NULL without checking, and keyid_data dereferences akid->keyid which can be NULL for an empty AKI SEQUENCE. This leads to a NULL pointer dereference and a segmentation fault (SIGSEGV) that crashes the Perl process when processing untrusted certificates.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial of service by triggering a segmentation fault in the Perl process using Crypt::OpenSSL::X509 by supplying a crafted certificate with malformed extensions. This results in a crash of the affected application, causing availability disruption. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity according to the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Users should monitor official Ubuntu security advisories for updates to libcrypt-openssl-x509-perl and apply patches when available. Until then, avoid processing untrusted certificates with affected versions to mitigate risk.
