UBUNTU-CVE-2026-58251

High
Published: 07/08/2026 (07/08/2026, 20:16:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: nats-server

Description

NATS Server versions prior to 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16 contain a vulnerability where an authenticated user with subscription deny permissions can bypass a plain subject deny rule by using a queue subscription. This occurs because queue-specific deny evaluation can override the plain subject deny result if the queue name itself is not denied. The issue is fixed in versions 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16. Several Ubuntu package versions of nats-server are affected. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Technical Analysis

NATS Server is a high-performance messaging server. In affected versions prior to 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16, an authenticated user with subscription deny permissions could bypass a plain subject deny rule by leveraging queue subscriptions. This is due to the queue-specific deny evaluation overriding the plain subject deny result when the queue name itself was not denied. This vulnerability allows bypassing intended subscription restrictions. The issue has been fixed in the specified versions.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with subscription deny permissions can bypass subject deny rules using queue subscriptions, potentially allowing unauthorized subscription to messages that should be denied. The impact is limited to confidentiality (C:H) with no integrity or availability impact reported. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade nats-server to version 2.14.0, 2.12.7, or 2.11.16 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. The affected Ubuntu package versions listed should be updated accordingly to these fixed versions or later. No other mitigation is indicated.
