UBUNTU-CVE-2026-59831

High
Published: 07/09/2026 (07/09/2026, 23:17:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: gh

Description

GitHub CLI (gh) versions from 2.10.0 through 2.95.0 contain a vulnerability in the 'gh codespace jupyter' command. This command opens a JupyterLab URL supplied by a process inside the Codespace without validating that the URL is a loopback HTTP or HTTPS address. This flaw allows a crafted vscode:// or vscode-insiders:// URL to be passed to VS Code, potentially enabling command execution. The issue is fixed in version 2.96.0.

Technical Analysis

The GitHub CLI (gh) tool, versions 2.10.0 through 2.95.0, has a vulnerability in the 'gh codespace jupyter' command. When connecting to a malicious Codespace, the command opens a JupyterLab URL provided by a process inside the Codespace without validating that it is a loopback HTTP or HTTPS address. This lack of validation allows an attacker to supply a crafted vscode:// or vscode-insiders:// URL, which is then handed off to VS Code, potentially leading to command execution. The vulnerability is resolved in version 2.96.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling a Codespace can exploit this vulnerability to execute commands on the user's system by supplying a malicious URL that the 'gh codespace jupyter' command will open without proper validation. The impact includes limited confidentiality and integrity loss but no availability impact. The attack requires user interaction (UI) and low privileges but can affect the system due to the command execution capability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade GitHub CLI (gh) to version 2.96.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Until then, avoid connecting to untrusted Codespaces using the 'gh codespace jupyter' command. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 2.96.0.
