Description

A vulnerability in GitLab EE versions from 18.9 before 18.11.7, 19.0 before 19.0.4, and 19.1 before 19.1.2 allows an authenticated user with minimal access permissions to read work item metadata from private projects due to missing authorization checks. This issue affects certain Ubuntu package versions as well. The vulnerability does not impact integrity or availability, only confidentiality of metadata. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Technical Analysis

GitLab EE contained an authorization bypass vulnerability in specific versions (18.9 before 18.11.7, 19.0 before 19.0.4, and 19.1 before 19.1.2) that allowed authenticated users with minimal permissions to access work item metadata from private projects. This occurred because of missing authorization checks. The issue was remediated by GitLab in the stated fixed versions. The vulnerability affects certain Ubuntu package versions (8.4.3+dfsg-9, 8.4.3+dfsg-12, 8.5.8+dfsg-5) corresponding to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. There is no indication of known exploits in the wild.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with minimal access could read metadata of work items in private projects, potentially exposing sensitive project information at the metadata level. There is no impact on data integrity or availability. The confidentiality impact is limited to metadata exposure only.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade affected GitLab EE instances to versions 18.11.7 or later for the 18.9 series, 19.0.4 or later for the 19.0 series, and 19.1.2 or later for the 19.1 series. For Ubuntu packages, upgrade to versions later than 8.5.8+dfsg-5 if available. Since this is not a cloud service, remediation depends on applying these updates. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed for the Ubuntu packages; check vendor advisories for current remediation guidance.
