Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-4152 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in GIMP's JP2 file parser. The flaw is due to insufficient validation of the length of user-supplied data before copying it into a heap buffer, which can be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the GIMP process. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as opening a crafted JP2 file or visiting a malicious page. The vulnerability has been publicly disclosed by the Zero Day Initiative with a CVSS score of 7.8. GIMP has issued an official patch to remediate the vulnerability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user running GIMP. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system depending on user privileges. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability (all rated high). No active exploits have been reported in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

An official patch has been released by GIMP to correct this vulnerability. Users should apply the update available at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/commit/f64c9c23ba3c37dc7b875a9fb477c23953b4666e to remediate the issue. Since exploitation requires user interaction, users should also exercise caution when opening JP2 files from untrusted sources until patched.
