Description

ZoneMinder versions 1.37.0 before 1.38.0 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the files view that allows authenticated users to read arbitrary files. The path parameter is not properly validated before being passed to output_file, enabling attackers with Events view permission to access sensitive files like configuration files containing database credentials.

Technical Analysis

A path traversal vulnerability exists in ZoneMinder versions 1.37.0 before 1.38.0 within the files view functionality. The vulnerability arises because the 'path' parameter is not properly validated before being passed to the output_file function. Authenticated users with Events view permission can exploit this to read arbitrary files on the server, including sensitive configuration files that may contain database credentials. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2024-58386 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an authenticated user with limited privileges (Events view permission) to read arbitrary files on the ZoneMinder server. This can lead to disclosure of sensitive information such as database credentials, potentially facilitating further attacks or unauthorized access to the system.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in ZoneMinder version 1.38.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 1.38.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
