The LifterLMS – WP LMS for eLearning, Online Courses, & Quizzes plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation. This is due to the plugin not properly validating a user's identity prior to allowing them to modify their own role via the REST API. The permission check in the update_item_permissions_check() function returns true when a user updates their own account without verifying the role changes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with student-level access and above, to escalate their privileges to administrator by updating their own roles array via a crafted REST API request. Another endpoint intended for instructors also provides an attack vector. Affected version ranges are 3.5.3-3.41.2, 4.0.0-4.21.3, 5.0.0-5.10.0, 6.0.0-6.11.0, 7.0.0-7.8.7, 8.0.0-8.0.7, 9.0.0-9.0.7, 9.1.0.

A sophisticated malware campaign is increasingly targeting WordPress websites to inject online casino spam content. This malware uses multiple redundancy and reinfection techniques, storing payloads in databases and non-standard file extensions to evade detection and maintain persistence. The campaign exploits the popularity of online gambling and leverages the decline of other spam sources, such as essay writing services, to focus on lucrative casino spam. Although primarily noted in Indonesia due to strict gambling laws, the campaign has international reach. The malware's complexity and persistence mechanisms pose risks to website integrity, SEO rankings, and user trust. European organizations running WordPress sites could be targeted, especially those with lax security or outdated plugins. Mitigation requires advanced detection, continuous monitoring, and tailored cleanup strategies. The threat is assessed as medium severity due to its impact on website integrity and SEO rather than direct data breach or system compromise.

The reported threat involves rigged online poker games, as discussed on Schneier on Security and shared via Reddit InfoSec News. This issue highlights the manipulation or cheating in online poker platforms, potentially through software vulnerabilities or fraudulent practices by operators. While no specific technical details or affected versions are provided, the concern centers on the integrity and fairness of online gambling systems. The threat is categorized as medium severity due to its impact on trust and financial loss rather than direct system compromise. European organizations involved in online gambling or payment processing could face reputational damage and financial risks. Mitigation requires enhanced auditing, transparency, and regulatory oversight of online poker platforms. Countries with significant online gambling markets and regulatory frameworks, such as the UK, Germany, and Malta, are more likely to be affected. Given the lack of detailed exploit information and no direct system compromise, the suggested severity is medium. Defenders should focus on verifying platform integrity, monitoring for fraudulent activity, and ensuring compliance with gambling regulations.
The UNK_SmudgedSerpent threat actor, likely linked to Iranian espionage efforts, targeted academics and foreign policy experts from June to August 2025 using phishing campaigns with domestic political and health-related lures. The actor employed Remote Management & Monitoring (RMM) tools and credential harvesting techniques, showing overlapping tactics with known Iranian groups such as TA455, TA453, and TA450. Although attribution is not definitive, the targeting aligns with Iranian intelligence priorities, focusing on sensitive policy and academic sectors. The campaign's medium severity reflects moderate impact potential without known exploits in the wild. European organizations involved in foreign policy, academia, and research are at risk, especially in countries with strong diplomatic ties or geopolitical interest in Iran. Mitigation requires targeted user awareness, strict monitoring of RMM tool usage, and enhanced email filtering tuned to political and health-themed lures. Countries like Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands are most likely affected due to their active academic communities and diplomatic engagement with Iran. The threat's medium severity is due to its espionage focus, moderate ease of exploitation via phishing, and the absence of widespread destructive payloads or zero-day exploits. Defenders should prioritize detection of credential harvesting and suspicious RMM activity while maintaining vigilance for evolving Iranian espionage tactics.
Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting payroll websites to exploit vulnerabilities and gain unauthorized access to sensitive employee financial data. This emerging threat involves attackers attempting to compromise payroll portals, potentially leading to data theft, fraudulent payments, and disruption of payroll operations. Although no specific vulnerabilities or exploits have been detailed, the medium severity rating indicates a notable risk that requires attention. European organizations with online payroll systems are at risk, especially those with less mature security controls or third-party payroll providers. Attackers may leverage phishing, credential stuffing, or web application attacks to breach these systems. Mitigation requires enhanced authentication mechanisms, continuous monitoring, and strict access controls. Countries with significant financial sectors and high adoption of digital payroll solutions, such as Germany, the UK, France, and the Netherlands, are more likely to be targeted. Given the threat's potential impact on confidentiality and integrity of payroll data and the ease of exploitation through common attack vectors, the suggested severity is medium. Defenders should prioritize securing payroll platforms and educating employees about phishing and credential hygiene.

The Kurdish hacktivist group Hezi Rash has reportedly conducted approximately 350 distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks over a two-month period. These attacks leverage botnet capabilities to overwhelm targeted networks and services, causing service disruptions. While no specific affected software versions or exploits are identified, the volume and persistence of attacks indicate a sustained campaign likely aimed at political or ideological targets. The threat is assessed as medium severity due to the disruption potential but lacks evidence of data breaches or advanced exploitation. European organizations, especially those with high-profile online services or political relevance, could face availability impacts. Mitigation requires enhanced DDoS detection and response capabilities, including traffic filtering, rate limiting, and collaboration with ISPs and DDoS mitigation providers. Countries with significant Kurdish populations or geopolitical interest in Kurdish issues, such as Germany, France, and the UK, may be more likely targets. Given the ease of launching DDoS attacks via botnets and the broad scope of potential targets, vigilance is advised. No authentication or user interaction is required for the attacks, but the impact is limited to availability disruptions without direct data compromise.
The Aisuru botnet, previously known for conducting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, has shifted its operational focus towards leveraging residential proxies. This evolution allows attackers to route malicious traffic through compromised residential IP addresses, enhancing stealth and evasion capabilities. The botnet's new use of residential proxies poses significant risks to network security, privacy, and the integrity of online services. European organizations could face increased challenges in detecting and mitigating attacks originating from legitimate residential IP ranges. The threat is assessed as high severity due to the botnet's potential to facilitate various malicious activities beyond DDoS, including credential stuffing, web scraping, and anonymized command and control communications. Mitigation requires enhanced network monitoring, anomaly detection focused on proxy traffic, and collaboration with ISPs to identify and remediate infected devices. Countries with high broadband penetration and significant residential internet usage, such as Germany, France, the UK, and the Netherlands, are likely to be most affected. The threat's shift to residential proxies complicates traditional defense mechanisms, necessitating adaptive and proactive security strategies.
