GhostLock is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel introduced in version 2.6.39 and present in all major Linux distributions since 2011. The flaw occurs in a kernel helper function responsible for cleaning up tasks, where under certain deadlock rollback conditions, memory is freed and reused while still referenced by another task. This can be exploited for local privilege escalation to root and container escape. The vulnerability was patched in April 2026 after 15 years. Researchers demonstrated exploit code and earned a significant bug bounty from Google for their findings.
CVE-2026-53359, known as Januscape, is a 16-year-old use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor's shadow MMU code. It allows attackers with root privileges inside a guest VM to escape the virtual machine and execute code on the host system. This vulnerability affects both Intel and AMD architectures and poses a significant risk to multi-tenant public cloud environments. Exploitation can lead to denial of service or remote code execution on the host, compromising all VMs on the physical machine. The flaw was patched in the Linux kernel mainline on June 19, 2026. Exploitation requires root access in the guest, which is commonly granted by default in cloud VM instances, or can be chained with privilege escalation vulnerabilities. No known exploits are reported in the wild as of the publication date.
Organizations are urged to patch after proof-of-concept code makes the Linux root escalation flaw easier to exploit. The post Proof-of-Concept Exploit Released for Linux ‘Bad Epoll’ Root Access Vulnerability appeared first on SecurityWeek .

TOP ATTACKS AND BREACHES River Bank & Trust, a US financial institution, has experienced a ransomware incident after an unauthorized actor accessed the network of parent company River Financial Corporation on June 16. The bank found ransomware on portions of its server environment and is assessing whether personal data was accessed or exfiltrated. Indra Group, a Spanish defense, aerospace, and technology contractor and NATO cyber coalition member, has confirmed a ransomware attack affecting one subsidiary. The Gentlemen ransomware gang threatened to leak allegedly stolen data, while Indra said the incident was contained and that service continuity was maintained. Check Point Threat Emulation and Harmony Endpoint provide protection against this threat Nidec, a Japanese electric motor and industrial manufacturer, has disclosed a ransomware attack affecting the network of its Taiwanese subsidiary, Nidec Chaun Choung Technology. BlackField group claimed responsibility and alleged theft of more than two terabytes of corporate data, including employee, financial, procurement, manufacturing, legal, and IT records. US insurance firm Aflac has disclosed a data breach affecting its Japan operations after attackers accessed its policyholder portal between June 15 and June 25. Personal and financial data of nearly 4.4 million customers was exposed, including policyholder information and premium payment account details. AI THREATS Check Point Research has demonstrated a browser-native ransomware technique generated by a large language model that abuses Chrome’s File System Access API. A fake image-enhancement page convinces users to grant folder access, then reads, exfiltrates, and encrypts photos inside the browser on Android and Windows. Researchers examined shell command injection weaknesses in open-source AI coding agents, finding that 10 out of 11 popular tools failed to block obfuscated destructive commands. Simple rewrites bypassed filters and enabled destructive actions, including file deletion, while only the Continue agent properly parsed commands. Researchers warned that attackers are exploiting LLM phantom squatting by registering AI-generated domains to hijack traffic and deliver phishing. They recorded 250,000 hallucinated domains and subsequent registrations, including an AI-built phishing kit, Montana Empire, using a postal-service domain for credential theft. In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ipv6: account for fraggap on the paged allocation path
In __ip6_append_data(), when the paged-allocation branch is taken
(MSG_MORE / NETIF_F_SG / large fraglen), alloclen and pagedlen are
computed as
alloclen = fragheaderlen + transhdrlen;
pagedlen = datalen - transhdrlen;
datalen already includes fraggap (datalen = length + fraggap). When
fraggap is non-zero, this is not the first skb and transhdrlen is zero.
The fraggap bytes carried over from the previous skb are copied just past
the fragment headers in the new skb's linear area. The linear area is
therefore undersized by fraggap bytes while pagedlen is overstated by the
same amount, and the copy writes past skb->end into the trailing
skb_shared_info.
An unprivileged user can trigger this via a UDPv6 socket using
MSG_MORE together with MSG_SPLICE_PAGES.
The bad accounting was introduced by commit 773ba4fe9104 ("ipv6:
avoid partial copy for zc"). Before commit ce650a166335 ("udp6: Fix
__ip6_append_data()'s handling of MSG_SPLICE_PAGES"), the negative
copy value caused -EINVAL to be returned. That later commit allowed
MSG_SPLICE_PAGES to proceed in this case, making the corruption
triggerable.
The non-paged branch sets alloclen to fraglen, which already accounts
for fraggap because datalen does. Bring the paged branch in line by
adding fraggap to alloclen and subtracting it from pagedlen.
After this adjustment, copy no longer collapses to -fraggap on the
paged path, so remove the stale comment describing that old arithmetic.
Since a negative copy is no longer expected for a valid MSG_SPLICE_PAGES
case, remove the MSG_SPLICE_PAGES exception from the negative copy check.

An intrusion was investigated that began with exploitation of CVE-2026-48558, a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in SimpleHelp RMM software. The threat actor obtained unauthorized technician access and deployed two previously undocumented malware samples: TaskWeaver and Djinn Stealer. TaskWeaver is a heavily obfuscated Node.js loader that establishes encrypted communications and delivers additional payloads. Djinn Stealer targets credentials across Windows, macOS, and Linux systems, collecting authentication data for cloud platforms, source control, package registries, AI development assistants, browsers, SSH keys, and cryptocurrency wallets. The attacker leveraged legitimate RMM capabilities to transfer files and execute commands across managed systems. Stolen AI assistant tokens provided extensive access to repositories, databases, and cloud accounts. The intrusion demonstrated how a single authentication bypass in trusted management infrastructure can enable widespread credential theft and p...

In a previous diary, I talked about stack strings&#;x26;#;x5b;1&#;x26;#;x5d; with a practical example of them. Since my SEC670 class, I&#;x26;#;xe2;&#;x26;#;x80;&#;x26;#;x99;m even more interested&#;x26;#;xc2;&#;x26;#;xa0;in malware obfuscation techniques. I had&#;x26;#;xc2;&#;x26;#;xa0;a look at process names. When you list running processes on a computer, can you trust what you see&#;x26;#;x3f; If you&#;x26;#;39;re facing a rootkit, malicious processes can be simply hidden (the API calls or commands to list processed have been tampered). But a malicious process&#;x26;#;xc2;&#;x26;#;xa0;can also mimic a non-suspicious name by masquerading their name. This technique (T1036 in the MITRE ATT&#;x26;CK framework&#;x26;#;x5b;2&#;x26;#;x5d;) has been used by attackers in many campaigns. A good example of the Velvet Ant Chinese group&#;x26;#;x5b;3&#;x26;#;x5d;. The goal is to hide the &#;x26;#;xe2;&#;x26;#;x80;œmalware&#;x26;#;xe2;&#;x26;#;x80; process name by replacing it with something&#;x26;#;xc2;&#;x26;#;xa0;that won&#;x26;#;xe2;&#;x26;#;x80;&#;x26;#;x99;t attract the Security Analyst&#;x26;#;xe2;&#;x26;#;x80;&#;x26;#;x99;s eyes or defeat security controls.

CVE-2026-23111 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's nftables subsystem, introduced by a flawed security fix for a previous vulnerability (CVE-2023-4244). It affects Container-Optimized OS nodes and can lead to privilege escalation. Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Standard clusters are impacted, while Autopilot clusters are not vulnerable by default unless specific insecure configurations are used. Patch versions have been released for Ubuntu node pools and Container-Optimized OS node pools on GKE. Other GKE environments (AWS, Azure) and VMware are pending patch and severity updates. Bare metal GDC software is not affected as it does not include an OS. The vulnerability is rated high severity. Detection techniques focus on monitoring behavior rather than payload signatures, applicable even on patched kernels.
A supply chain attack targeted the Arch User Repository (AUR) by publishing over 1,500 malicious packages. Attackers modified abandoned packages to execute malicious code during installation, leveraging eBPF for persistence and hiding. The malware is capable of credential and secret harvesting, including SSH keys and tokens, and can evade detection by hiding processes and files. Arch Linux responded by suspending new AUR account registrations to contain the attack and is actively removing malicious commits.
