StreamRat is an Android banking trojan distributed via Meta and TikTok ads disguised as a free TV-streaming app targeting Spanish-speaking users, mainly in Spain. It uses a two-stage installation with a dropper that disables internet connectivity through fake VPN connections. After installation, it abuses Accessibility Services and the MediaProjection API to grant attackers near-complete control over the device, including VNC remote control, hidden screen manipulation, keylogging, credential-stealing overlays, UI data collection, and screen blocking. The malware operates as a Malware-as-a-Service with a multi-role control panel and WebSocket-based command and control communications. The campaign potentially affected around 570,000 users. No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available. Join the discussion | AlienVault OTX General | 09/02/2026, 13:39:04 UTC Added: 09/02/2026, 16:22:27 UTC |
A new Android Trojan masquerades as legitimate news reader or digital ID apps, stealthily stealing sensitive data by exploiting Android Accessibility Services and overlay features. It primarily targets banking and cryptocurrency applications by overlaying fake login screens to capture credentials. The malware operates silently in the background, connects to a remote command center for updates and cleanup, and has been observed mainly in Southeast Asia. Although no CVE or known exploits in the wild are reported, the malware's capabilities pose significant risks to user confidentiality and financial security. This threat highlights the importance of enhanced mobile security and user vigilance against fake apps and overlay attacks. A large-scale Malware-as-a-Service operation, orchestrated by Chinese-speaking threat actors, has infected over 11,000 Android devices globally with the PlayPraetor Remote Access Trojan. The campaign primarily targets Europe, with significant presence in Portugal, Spain, and France, but also affects Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The botnet is expanding rapidly, with over 2,000 new infections weekly, focusing on Spanish and French speakers. The operation is managed through a sophisticated Chinese-language Command and Control panel, supporting multiple affiliates. PlayPraetor abuses Android's Accessibility Services to gain real-time control over compromised devices, targeting nearly 200 banking apps and cryptocurrency wallets worldwide. Multiple samples of SpyNote, a sophisticated Android spyware, were discovered in open directories, disguised as legitimate apps like Google Translate, Temp Mail, and Deutsche Postbank. The malware exploits accessibility services and device administrator privileges to steal sensitive information from infected devices. Samples were found on various servers, including AWS and SonderCloud Limited, with different command and control (C2) infrastructures. The discovery highlights the ongoing threat of SpyNote, especially after its source code leak in late 2022, and emphasizes the importance of proactive threat detection and analysis.
