Missing validation of multibyte character length in PostgreSQL text manipulation allows a database user to issue crafted queries that achieve a buffer overrun.  That suffices to execute arbitrary code as the operating system user running the database.  Versions before PostgreSQL 18.2, 17.8, 16.12, 15.16, and 14.21 are affected.

The vulnerability CVE-2026-2006 in PostgreSQL arises from missing validation of multibyte character length during text manipulation operations. This improper validation can lead to a buffer overrun condition, which an attacker with database user privileges can exploit by issuing specially crafted queries. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with the operating system privileges of the PostgreSQL server process. The vulnerability affects PostgreSQL versions before 18.2, 17.8, 16.12, 15.16, and 14.21. Red Hat has released security updates for affected PostgreSQL packages in their Enterprise Linux distributions, providing official fixes.
