DarkComet RAT malware has resurfaced disguised as a fake Bitcoin-related tool, distributed via a RAR archive containing a UPX-packed executable. Upon execution, it installs itself as 'explorer.exe' in the user's AppData folder and establishes persistence through a registry run key. The malware communicates with its command and control server at kvejo991.ddns.net on port 1604. It performs keylogging, storing captured keystrokes in a dedicated folder, and uses process injection into notepad.exe to evade detection. The malware also spawns multiple cmd.exe and conhost. Qilin ransomware is used for domain-wide encryption, and a ransom is then demanded for the decryption keys and/or to prevent the publication of the stolen data. A sophisticated ransomware campaign has been uncovered, masquerading as a new SAP Ariba tool. The attack uses email lures, sender spoofing, and impersonation of legitimate software vendors to deliver LeeMe Ransomware. The malware employs SAP branding, a fake GUI, and a Portuguese ransom note. It targets various file types using AES-256 encryption and includes keylogging and data exfiltration capabilities. The ransomware creates autorun entries, bypasses Windows Defender, and sets up remote access. With a relatively low ransom demand, it appears to be a widespread campaign rather than targeting high-value individuals. The attack serves as a reminder of the importance of user vigilance and proper cybersecurity measures.
