A flaw was found in shadow-utils. When asking for a new password, shadow-utils asks the password twice. If the password fails on the second attempt, shadow-utils fails in cleaning the buffer used to store the first entry. This may allow an attacker with enough access to retrieve the password from the memory.

CVE-2023-4641 is a vulnerability identified in the shadow-utils package, a core component used in many Linux distributions for managing user authentication and password changes. The issue arises during the password change process, where shadow-utils prompts the user to enter a new password twice to confirm it. If the second password entry fails validation, shadow-utils does not properly clear the memory buffer that stored the first password attempt.
